On Saturday, September 21st, a national event took place called Ladies Learning Code. Ladies around the country learned the basics about HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). In simpler terms, instructors taught women throughout Canada how to create basic websites. Nationally, 498 women attended the event; 43 of those women participated in Edmonton.
I was one of the lucky beginners who attended Ladies Learning Code! Tammy Lee, one of Top Draw’s senior web developers, taught the course and was assisted by 15 mentors, including Top Draw’s web developer Peter Wegren. Tammy kept the course interesting by sharing a lot of “developer” jokes and sharing experiences of what NOT to do when building a website.
Overall, it was a fun, interesting course in a comfortable and energetic environment. At times, code looks daunting and confusing, but it’s rewarding and exciting to see your code transform into a unique webpage/website. If you’re interested in learning the basics about HTML and CSS, I highly recommend participating in this event! You won’t become an expert web developer, but you’ll definitely have a better understanding about the components of your website!
